How To Delete a LinkedIn Group?
Aside from building a personal profile, you could also create a group on LinkedIn. This feature offers people from the same industry and interests to post, comment, and share their ideas. If there is no existing group that you wanted to join, you can create one.
However, if, for some reason, you wanted to delete your LinkedIn group, this blog lists the step by steps on how to delete a LinkedIn group:
- Go through your group’s homepage on your desktop.
- Choose the group that you wanted to be removed.
- Click the “edit” icon on the right side of the group, then click “Delete this group”
- Confirm your action by clicking “Delete Group”.
Creating and deleting a group on LinkedIn is easy to do. But deleting it is a permanent action, meaning, you cannot retrieve the group once you have deleted it. Before fully deleting your group, warning information will prompt to recommend you other actions such as transfer of ownership and informing the group members.
What Happens When You Delete a LinkedIn Group?
As long as you are the administrator of the group, the LinkedIn group can be terminated anytime and you can create another one once needed. These groups can be searched by LinkedIn professionals on the groups’ directory. Once you decide to delete it, it will also be removed from the directory.
Again, deleting a LinkedIn group is irreversible. Once you have deleted it, you and the other members will not be able to access the group anymore.
Alternatives of Deleting a LinkedIn Group
Instead of deleting your LinkedIn group, you may opt to change the roles of members of your group. If you are the owner, you can assign other members to act as the group owner. By this, you can still keep the group without having any responsibilities on managing it.
To add or remove a group owner, just follow these steps:
- Go through your group’s homepage on your desktop.
- Click “Manage Group” on the homepage.
- Click the name of the member you want to take over. Once you click “more” you can select whether you want them to be the group owner or a manager.
Take note that you cannot remove owner permissions unless another group owner is managing the group.
Aside from transferring ownership of the group, there are times that groups are merged to keep their members. To do this, inform the members first by posting the other group’s “Join URL” link. Once the members have joined, you may delete the previous LinkedIn group.
Can’t Delete a LinkedIn Group?
You cannot delete a LinkedIn group if you are not an owner. If not a member, you should join the group first and contact the group owner to change your role to the group owner. There should be approval from the existing owners of a group before assigning you as a new owner. This is a part of the LinkedIn policy, even the existing owners are inactive.
Also, you cannot delete a group if you are using a smartphone or a tablet. Deleting a group can only be done if you are working on a desktop.
Pros and Cons of LinkedIn Groups
There are two kinds of groups on LinkedIn. On a “standard” group, it allows any member to invite others to join. It enables the group members to have wider and more open discussions and perspectives. However, on a standard group, you have no control over anyone who wants to join since it does not need membership approval.
If you opt to choose a more controlled group, you may decide to keep your group “unlisted”. It reduces the entering of spam accounts since you have to review membership approval before a LinkedIn account can enter the group. But having your group “unlisted” can turn away members since they have to go through membership applications.
The latter choice is recommended for groups with specific interests to limit and focus their discussions on a certain topic.
