One of the best ways to moderate a Facebook group and keep the discussions clean is to mute people who are annoying.  As a Facebook group mute is temporary it is the less radical alternative to removing and blocking people from the Facebook group.

In this Facebook group tutorial, we are going to show you three ways how you can mute someone in a Facebook group temporarily.

3 ways to mute a Facebook group member

There are three ways how to mute someone in a Facebook group:

  • you can mute the person manually
  • you can mute Facebook group members automatically if they get reported in Facebook group rooms
  • you can mute someone automatically if they had multiple Facebook posts or comments reported

We will show how to configure each of these Facebook group mutes in the second half of the article.

But in all of these cases, the mute is the same. If a Facebook group member is muted, he is basically temporarily banned from engagement in the group.

He still has access to the Facebook group, but he won’t be able to comment, create new group posts, engage with posts or enter group rooms.

How to mute Facebook group members manually?

If someone is really annoying,  the Facebook group admin can simply mute him:

  1. Open the Facebook group
  2. Click ‘Members’
  3. Search for the member who you want to mute then click on the three dots
  4. Select ‘Mute in the group’mute Facebook group member
  5. Specify the amount of time you want to mute the personspecify Facebook group mute length

How to auto-mute members in a Facebook group?

  3. Below Manage People, click Add next to Mute person if.
  4. You can then either:
    1. Select the set of preset criteria and click Apply Criteria. If you’d like to modify the preset criteria, click then Edit, then change the criteria and click Update then Apply Criteria.

Can’t mute Facebook group members

If you can’t mute a Facebook group member, you have to check if you have the right access in the Facebook group.

You have to be either a Facebook group admin or a Facebook group moderator to be able to mute people in the Facebook group.

Secondly, the automatic meeting of Facebook group members can only be configured if you have been switched to the new Facebook group experience.

Muting alternatives in a Facebook group

If you find that someone needs to be continuously muted because of annoying behavior then you might have to use a more radical method of moderating. You can choose between two Facebook group mute alternatives.

  • Remove the person from the Facebook group
  • Block the person from the Facebook group.

Both of these methods will permanently remove the person from the Facebook group. So none of them is temporary and the person will be deleted from the Facebook group as well.

The only difference is that if you block someone from a Facebook group, he won’t be able to join the group later.
