How does the block keywords feature work on Facebook?
You can add a list of block keywords to your Facebook page and when those keywords or variations of the keywords are mentioned in comments, these Facebook comments get automatically hidden from the comment list.
You can add up to 1000 block keywords to a Facebook page and Facebook doesn’t only block those keywords but it bans any variations of these keywords (plurals, misspellings, etc.)
You can add these block keywords manually or if you have a list of block keywords, you can also upload the list of block keywords in a CSV file.
Block keywords vs profanity filter
The main difference between using a block keyword list and using the profanity filter on Facebook is that the profanity filter is completely automated and you give all the power to Facebook.
You don’t have to create and upload a block keyword list that you want to use, Facebook will block words and phrases that the algorithm thinks can be spammy or offensive.
So when you use profanity filters, you don’t really have control over the keywords and comments Facebook will hide from the public.
How to block keywords on a Facebook page?
To block keywords on your Facebook page:
- Open the Facebook page.
- Click on ‘Settings’ in the left column
- Under the ‘General’ tab, scroll down to ‘Page moderation.
- Here you can add they block keywords, separated by a comma
- Or you can upload a file with the keyword list by clicking on ‘Upload form .csv’)
- Click on ‘Add’
- Click on ‘Save’.
Going through this process, Facebook will hide comments where these block keywords or variations are shown up.

Can’t block keywords on a Facebook page
If you can’t access this Facebook page moderation feature in your Facebook page settings, it probably means that you don’t have the necessary Facebook page role to do so.
You have to be a Facebook page admin to be able to add block keywords to your Facebook page. Even Facebook page moderators won’t be able to add block keywords to the Facebook page.
Block keywords on your Facebook profile
Unfortunately, currently block keywords can only be added to the Facebook page.
On your personal profile, you have to use a manual approach to hide comments that you feel are inappropriate as you can’t add block keywords to your Facebook account.
